Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Icing

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3-4 tbsp milk
  • 2 tbsp light corn syrup
  • Red white, and blue food coloring

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Use star-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Place them on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorating

  • In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and corn syrup. Divide the icing into three bowls and color each with red, blue, and leave one white.
  • Use piping bags to apply the icing to the cooled cookies, creating your desired patriotic designs. Allow the icing to set completely before serving.

Serving

  • Arrange your decorated cookies on a platter and serve them at your 4th of July celebration. They are sure to be a hit!

Storage

  • Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze the undecorated cookies.
