Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide the dough into three equal parts. Color one part with red food coloring, one with blue, and leave one plain.
  • Roll pieces of each colored dough into small balls, and then combine them to form a larger ball. Flatten slightly and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Once cooled, decorate with patriotic sprinkles or icing as desired.
  • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to one week.
