Equipment

  • 1 Mixing bowls various sizes
  • 1 electric mixer or hand mixer
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 baking sheets lined with parchment paper
  • 1 piping bags

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Decorations

  • Red white, and blue gel food coloring
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon light corn syrup

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • In another bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer until light and fluffy. This should take about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, mixing until fully incorporated. Gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing just until a dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into three equal parts. Tint one part with red food coloring and another with blue, leaving the third part plain.
  • On a floured surface, roll each color of dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use star-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
  • Place the cookies on a prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  • In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and corn syrup until smooth. Divide and tint with the respective food colors.
  • Using piping bags, outline and flood the cookies with icing. Allow the icing to set before serving or storing.
  • Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze undecorated cookies.
