Equipment

  • 1 cupcake tin lined with paper liners
  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 Mixing Bowl large

Ingredients

Cupcake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine melted butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Avoid overmixing to maintain a tender texture.
  • Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let them cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Serving

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until smooth. Add milk as needed to reach the desired consistency. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, pipe or spread the frosting onto each cupcake. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles if desired.

Storage

  • Store the frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • Unfrosted cupcakes can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before frosting and serving.

Notes

Pro Tips: Use high-quality cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting to ensure the frosting sets properly.
Ingredient Substitutions: Substitute dark chocolate chips for a richer flavor, or use white chocolate chips for a sweet contrast.
How to Serve: Serve with a cold glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee. Top with fresh berries for added color.
Storage & Freshness: Keep in an airtight container to maintain freshness. Refrigerate if the weather is warm to prevent the frosting from melting.
Make-Ahead Tips: Bake cupcakes a day in advance and store unfrosted. Frost on the day of serving for best results.
