Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking pan greased
  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 Mixing Bowl large
  • 1 offset spatula

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing with an electric mixer on medium speed until just combined.
  • Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and well mixed. The batter will be thin.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Once the cake is completely cooled, apply your desired frosting using an offset spatula, spreading evenly over the top.
  • Decorate with your chosen toppings, such as fresh fruits, nuts, or chocolate curls. Get creative with your design!

Serving and Storage

  • Slice the cake into 12 pieces and serve chilled or at room temperature.
  • Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
