Equipment

  • 1 9-inch round cake pan greased and floured
  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 Mixing Bowl large

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Apple Layer

  • 3 apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Toss the apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Ensure the apples are well coated with the mixture for enhanced flavor.
  • Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan. Layer the spiced apples evenly over the batter, then cover with the remaining batter, spreading it gently to cover the apples.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serving

  • Once cooled, slice the cake into 8 pieces and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence.

Storage

  • Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
