Equipment

  • 1 9-inch round cake pan greased and floured
  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 Mixing Bowl large

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Apple Filling

  • 3 cups thinly sliced fresh apples
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan and set aside.
  • Peel and thinly slice the apples. Toss them in a bowl with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the batter. Pour the remaining batter over the apples, spreading it gently to cover.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a delightful dessert experience.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • To reheat, microwave individual slices for about 20 seconds or warm the entire cake in a 300°F oven for 10-15 minutes.
