  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 Mixing Bowl large

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Apples

  • 3 cups apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Homemade Custard

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • Peel and slice the apples into thin wedges. Toss with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • In a saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Stir in vanilla extract and set aside to cool slightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with milk, and mix until smooth.

Assembly

  • Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan. Spread a layer of custard over the batter, followed by a layer of apples. Repeat with the remaining batter, custard, and apples.
  • Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Slice and serve the cake warm or at room temperature. Enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
